Our Work

Honoring the legacy

of the nation's 34th President

Wayfinding at the Dwight D. Eisenhower Memorial honors the legacy of the World War II Supreme Allied Commander and his two terms as President.

Designed by world-renowned architect Frank Gehry, the Memorial encapsulates Eisenhower's legacy.

Opportunity: New to our nation’s capital is a grand memorial two decades in the making. The Dwight D. Eisenhower Memorial, commissioned by Congress in 1999, honors the legacy of the nation's 34th President. Designed by architect Frank Gehry, the Memorial encapsulates Eisenhower's legacy in a four-acre urban park adjacent to the National Mall.

Solution: ESI Design was proud to serve as an experience design consultant to the Dwight D. Eisenhower Memorial Commission over the course of the project, providing ways for visitors to engage and interact with the Memorial’s monumental design. ESI designed the Memorial’s wayfinding and signage, creating a cohesive and seamless visitor experience.

The look and feel of the wayfinding and signage follows the standards of both the National Park Service and National Mall. The wayfinding elements ESI Design created complement both the standards and the design of the Memorial. In material, they are traditional dark bronze signs with raised polished letters and forms. The design is clean and minimal focused on communicating clearly and maintaining a sense of reverence.

Result: The dedication of the Memorial in September 2020 marks the culmination of years of work by the Eisenhower Memorial Commission and its chairman Senator Pat Roberts (of Kansas, Eisenhower's home state), Memorial architect Frank Gehry, and the designers, artists, construction teams and others who brought the Memorial project from vision to reality.
