EVA London 2019: How Cultural Institutions Can Create Lasting Content-Producing Experiences

EVA London explores new technologies within cultural institutions such as museums, art, music, theater and the sciences. As part of the 2019 conference, ESI Design’s Director of Content and Activity Design, Jessica Fiorini, will be leading a workshop on applying open systems design, called “Attaining Content & Engagement Symbiosis.” She’ll share how ESI Design uses open systems to design lasting experiences for participants by referencing our work at the Statue of Liberty Museum and The Edward M Kennedy Institute for the Senate as case studies.

What To Expect: Designing Open Systems to Create Lasting Experiences for Cultural Institutions

Come to this workshop if you are interested in how an open system can help you reach your goals of engaging content. A revolutionary design tool, open systems create environments that are ever changing and dependent upon participants actions. Open systems are reshaping how designers think about spaces and storytelling.

After understanding  together what open systems are, Jessica will share how ESI Design’s team thinks about open systems and the impact it had on two successful educational experiences in the United States: The Edward M Kennedy Institute for the U.S. Senate, and the Statue of Liberty Museum. To conclude, Jessica will lead the workshop participants in designing an open system for a test project. You’ll leave the workshop with a better understanding of open systems, having seen best-in-class implementations, and with a set of practical tools to implement them into your next project.

Meet the Speaker: Jessica Fiorini

Jessica oversees the discipline at ESI Design that articulates the vision for new projects and develops the content, educational and experiential goals, and scripting for all related exhibits, media, and interactives. She has 10 years of experience creating activities, multiplayer and individualized games and apps for a wide range of educational, corporate, and independent organizations, including LEGO, McGraw-Hill, Nickelodeon, Scholastic and SMASHWORX.

Outside of her work at ESI, Jessica is an active game designer. Most recently she designed “Party Animal” a social cocktail party game for American Museum of Natural History’s sleepover experience and “Algebots” an algebra-themed puzzle game for Borough of Manhattan Community College with funding provided by the National Science Foundation. She also helped design “Oceans VR: Net Positive”, a virtual reality experience that explores the impact of overfishing on the high seas, for The Economist.

With a B.F.A. in Creative Writing from Roger Williams University and an M.F.A. in Theatre and Communication Arts from the University of New Orleans, Jessica is skilled at a variety of communication strategies. She ensures players are engaged with the content, as well as with each other. In short, Jessica brings the fun.
